Instructor Development Course

The Instructor Development Course (IDC) followed by the successful completion of a PADI Instructor Examination (IE) is your first step to being awarded the prestigious rating of Open Water Instructor (OWSI). Candidates for this professional rating receive training in PADI standards, procedures, philosophies and teaching methods. They are evaluated in the areas of practical teaching ability, watermanship, diving knowledge, attitude and professionalism. As a PADI Assistant Instructor, you have gained the basic knowledge of the PADI teaching philosophy. As an OWSI candidate, you will complete your training in the PADI Instructional System, and be eligible to take the PADI Instructor Examination.. 
Prerequisites:

To qualify for the Instructor Development Course, an individual must: 

  • Be 18 Years of age or older 
  • Be certified as an Assistant Instructor 
  • Good physical condition for diving. Must submit an approved medical exam form conducted within the previous 12 months and signed by a licensed physician 
  • Meet the following requirements of being a certified diver for a minimum of 12 months and logged 100 dives 
  • Submit proof of certification, within the last 24 months, in CPR 
  • Submit proof of entry level, advanced, and rescue certifications issued by another certification agency, if applicable
 
Curriculum:

The IDC is composed of 10 staff presentations and 5candidate presentations (2 classroom, 2confined water, and 1open water). There will also be time allotted to evaluate your watermanship skills, rescue techniques, and advanced diving ability. Once you have completed the IDC you will be ready to attend the IE. The IE is a two day examination which includes: written examinations, teaching presentations in the classroom, confined water and open water, skill evaluation and rescue evaluation. It is administered by an examiner from PADI headquarters and is a pass/fail program.

** Cross-over Instructors additional $100.00

Registration:

You will need to complete and return a PADI IDC application form and a deposit of $150. The balance will be due at orientation.
