What Gear Actually Freezes at Altitude (And What Doesn't)

New divers training in Colorado usually assume the cold is going to wreck their gear somehow. It's a fair worry. Our water sits well below what most certification agencies consider "warm," and altitude adds its own wrinkle. But the failure points aren't always where people expect. Some gear handles cold water just fine. Other gear needs real attention. Here's the actual breakdown.
What Actually Freezes: Your Regulator
This is the real one. When air moves from your tank through your regulator's first stage, the pressure drop causes the air to cool sharply. In water around 41°F (5°C) or colder, that temperature drop can be enough to freeze any moisture inside the regulator into ice crystals. If ice builds up somewhere it blocks the piston or diaphragm, the regulator can get stuck open and free-flow, dumping your air supply fast.
This is why cold-water regulators exist. They're built with sealed or insulated first stages specifically to resist this. If you're diving Colorado regularly, a cold-water-rated regulator isn't a luxury upgrade, it's the piece of gear most worth owning outright instead of renting.
What Actually Freezes: Your Dive Computer Battery
Cold hits batteries harder than most divers realize. The chemical reaction that produces power slows down in cold temperatures, which can cause a computer to read low on battery, or fail outright, even when the battery still has plenty of life once it warms back up. This catches people off guard most often after a computer has been sitting in a cold car or unheated gear bag before a dive.
Lithium batteries handle cold noticeably better than standard batteries, which is one more reason to check what's actually inside your computer before a winter dive day. Keeping your computer somewhere warm until right before you gear up helps too.
What Doesn't Freeze: Your Wetsuit or Drysuit
Your exposure suit isn't at risk of freezing solid, but it does have real limits worth knowing. Wetsuits work by trapping a thin layer of water against your skin and letting your body heat it, so they lose effectiveness as water temperature drops. Most divers move to a drysuit somewhere in the 50 to 60°F range, since a drysuit keeps you fully dry and insulates with air instead, which doesn't compress or lose warmth the way wet neoprene can at depth.
Neither suit type freezes on you mid-dive. The risk with suits is picking the wrong one for the water temperature you're actually diving in, not the material failing outright.
What Doesn't Freeze: Masks, Fins, and BCDs
Silicone masks, rubber fins, and your BCD bladder are built to handle cold water without any special preparation. You won't get a cracked mask skirt or a stiff fin from a Colorado dive. The one thing worth watching is a mask or fin left in a freezing car overnight, since extreme cold over time can make rubber and silicone slightly less flexible, but this is a storage issue, not a diving one.
Gloves and Hoods: Where Thickness Matters
Your hands and head lose heat fast in cold water, and standard 3mm gloves won't cut it much below 65°F. For Colorado conditions, look for 5 to 7mm gloves and a neoprene hood of similar thickness. This isn't about freezing, it's about comfort and dive time. Cold hands end dives early.
The Bottom Line
The gear that actually fails from cold is narrow: your regulator's first stage and your dive computer's battery. Everything else on your body is designed to handle water temperatures well below what you'll find at Aurora Reservoir or Chatfield. Get a cold-water-rated regulator, keep your computer warm before the dive, and dress for the actual water temperature, not the air temperature.
