Can You Get Scuba Certified at Any Age in Denver?
Carolyn Bryan Jun 17, 2026
There is a minimum age for scuba certification. There is no maximum.
PADI certifies students as young as 10 years old, with some restrictions on depth and dive conditions. On the other end, we have certified divers well into their 60s and 70s. Age itself is not a barrier. Health is a more relevant factor, and we cover that below.
For everything else about getting certified in Denver, see our complete scuba certification guide.
Minimum age for scuba certification
Age 10 to 14: Junior Open Water Diver
PADI's minimum age for scuba certification is 10. Students between 10 and 14 earn a Junior Open Water Diver certification, which comes with a few restrictions:
- Maximum depth of 40 feet (versus 60 feet for adult Open Water)
- Must dive with a certified adult diver (a parent, guardian, or dive professional)
- Cannot dive with just another Junior diver
These restrictions exist because younger divers are still developing the judgment and physical awareness that diving requires. They are not a reflection of ability. Plenty of 12-year-olds are excellent divers.
Junior divers complete the same course as adult students, the same pool sessions, the same checkout dives, the same knowledge reviews. The certification card just looks different and carries the depth restriction.
Age 15: Full Open Water upgrade
At 15, a Junior Open Water Diver can upgrade to a full Open Water certification with no restrictions. If you completed your Junior certification at 12 and turn 15, you do not need to repeat the course. The upgrade process is straightforward.
Age 8 to 9: Seal Team and Bubblemaker
PADI offers programs for children as young as 8 that introduce them to scuba in a pool-only environment. Bubblemaker is for kids 8 and up, conducted in water no deeper than 6 feet. Seal Team is an ongoing pool-based program that lets kids practice skills and earn patches.
These programs are not certifications. They do not come with c-cards or open water dive privileges. But they are a great way to get kids comfortable around scuba gear before they are old enough to certify.
Is there an upper age limit?
No. PADI does not impose a maximum age for certification. We have certified divers in their 60s and 70s who were complete beginners, and they dive regularly.
What matters at any age is that you are healthy enough to dive and comfortable in the water. The physical demands of recreational diving are moderate: you need to be able to swim 200 meters without stopping, tread water for 10 minutes, and carry your gear to and from the water.
If you have any health concerns, see the section below.
Health considerations at any age
Before your course begins, you will fill out a standard medical questionnaire. It covers conditions that can be affected by the pressure changes that happen when you dive: heart and lung conditions, ear and sinus issues, certain medications, and a few other categories.
If any of these apply to you, you will need a physician to sign off before you can enroll. This is a routine process for many students and does not automatically disqualify you. It simply means a doctor needs to review your specific situation.
Common conditions that require physician clearance include asthma, high blood pressure, and a history of heart or lung surgery. Conditions that typically do disqualify someone are less common. Your doctor will know the relevant considerations.
If you are unsure whether something on the questionnaire applies to you, call us before you sign up. We would rather sort it out before you show up to class than after.
Getting certified as a family
Getting certified together is one of the more popular things families do with us. A parent and a 10-year-old can take the course side by side and dive together for years afterward.
Junior divers are required to dive with a certified adult anyway, so certifying at the same time removes that constraint immediately. You finish the course, and you can dive together that same weekend.
See our group and family certification page for scheduling options and group pricing.
