How Long Does Scuba Certification Take in Denver?
Carolyn Bryan Jun 17, 2026
Most students finish their Open Water scuba certification in two to four weeks. That covers the online coursework, the pool sessions, and the open water checkout dives. Some people move faster. Some spread it out over a month. There is no deadline.
This article breaks down each phase so you know what to expect before you sign up. If you want the full picture of what certification involves, start with our complete guide to scuba certification in Denver.
The three phases and how long each takes
Phase 1: Online coursework
Both PADI and SSI have moved most of their classroom content online. You log in, work through the material at your own pace, and take knowledge reviews at the end of each section.
Plan for 8 to 10 hours total. Most students knock this out over three to five evenings at home before their first pool session. A few people finish it in a single long weekend. Either approach works.
The material covers how pressure affects your body, how to use your equipment, and what to do when things do not go exactly as planned underwater. It is worth taking seriously. You will use this information.
Phase 2: Pool sessions (confined water dives)
This is where you get in the water for the first time with full scuba gear. You and your instructor practice skills in shallow, controlled conditions before moving to open water.
PADI requires five confined water dives. At Underwater Phantaseas, these are grouped into sessions at our Lakewood pool, typically two to three sessions over one to two weeks depending on your schedule.
Some students move through the pool skills quickly and feel ready for open water after two sessions. Others need four. There is no rush. The goal is that you feel comfortable, not just that you complete a checklist.
Phase 3: Open water checkout dives
Your final four dives happen in open water, at one of our three certification locations. You demonstrate the same skills you practiced in the pool, and an instructor signs off on your certification.
Most students complete all four dives over a single weekend. We offer certification weekends at Aurora Reservoir (right in the Denver metro), The Crater at Homestead in Midway, Utah, and the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa, New Mexico.
Realistic timeline examples
The typical student: two to four weeks
You complete the online coursework in the first week, attend pool sessions on two or three evenings or weekend days over the following week, and finish your checkout dives the following weekend. Total time from first login to certified: about three weeks.
The motivated student: one week
If you have a flexible schedule and a trip coming up, it is possible to compress everything into about a week. You would need to complete the online material before your first pool session, attend pool sessions on back-to-back days, and head straight to an open water site the following weekend.
This is doable. It is not ideal for everyone, because the skills need a little time to settle. But plenty of students have done it.
The relaxed pace: four to six weeks
Some students prefer to space things out, taking one pool session per week and waiting a few weeks between pool and open water. This is completely fine. Your online materials do not expire, and your instructor will do a quick skills review before your open water dives regardless.
What affects your timeline
Your schedule. Evening and weekend availability is the biggest factor. Students who can only come in on Saturdays will take longer than students who are free on weekday evenings.
How quickly the skills click. Some students feel totally comfortable in the water after their first pool session. Others need an extra session to get their buoyancy dialed in or get comfortable equalizing. Neither situation is unusual.
Open water site availability. Certification weekends fill up. If you want to finish by a specific date, such as before a dive trip, give yourself buffer time and book your open water dates before you finish the pool sessions.
Weather and seasonality. Aurora Reservoir certifications depend on conditions. We run them from spring through fall. If you are starting in late fall or winter, plan for an indoor pool option or a trip to the Homestead Crater, which is open year-round.
Does it matter how long it takes?
No. Your certification card is the same whether you finished in eight days or eight weeks. PADI and SSI do not timestamp how long you took.
What does matter is that you feel genuinely prepared when you leave. Rushing through pool skills to hit a deadline is not worth it. If you are going to Cozumel in six weeks and want to be certified before you go, tell us when you sign up. We will help you plan a schedule that works.
