Most beginners start with PADI Open Water Diver — it's the entry-level certification recognized worldwide. Here's how it works:
1. **Online learning** — Complete the theory portion on your own schedule through the PADI eLearning platform.
2. **Pool sessions** — Practice skills in a controlled, confined water environment before heading to open water.
3. **Open water dives** — Complete four dives at a local dive site to earn your certification.
No prior experience is required. You need to be a comfortable swimmer, at least 10 years old, and in reasonable health. Most students finish in a weekend.

After achieving their PADI Open Water Diver certification, many divers continue to expand their diving skills and work toward their PADI Advanced Open Water certification.
